Imagine Piano was recorded at the iconic Hard Days Night Hotel in Liverpool, England. The setting is rich with musical history and atmosphere. With two carefully sampled velocity layers and authentic key release samples, this instrument captures the full nuance and personality of a very special piano.
To ensure incredible depth and realism, the piano was recorded using six different microphones, organized into three groups:
- Two pairs of omnidirectional microphones
- One XY stereo pair of cardioid microphones
Each microphone group has its own distinct character, and users can blend them freely to sculpt their perfect piano sound. Whether you want something soft and natural or bright and detailed, Imagine Piano offers the flexibility to create a sound that fits your track perfectly.
All samples were recorded with the sustain pedal down at 48kHz / 24-bit resolution, then carefully noise-reduced using iZotope RX for the cleanest possible sound.
Shaping the Sound
The simple but powerful effects section lets you take the sound even further:
- Reverb: Add lushness and depth with a built-in plate-style reverb.
- Delay: Use the tape delay effect to recreate the dreamy, vintage tones famously adored by John Lennon.
From intimate solo performances to atmospheric, ambient compositions, Imagine Piano brings an authentic, expressive feel to your music.

Behind the Scenes: Recording Imagine Piano
Creating Imagine Piano has been a real journey. From learning new recording techniques to refining every detail of the Kontakt instrument. Here’s a glimpse behind the scenes:
First, I set up three different mic options to capture the full character of the piano:
- Sennheiser MKH 8020 Omnidirectional Microphones
These high-end microphones offer a beautifully neutral, soft sound. I added a touch of plate reverb for a smooth, atmospheric vibe. - Clippy EM272 Omnidirectional Microphones
A budget-friendly option, but one I personally love. Positioned slightly closer to the strings, they deliver a brighter, more immediate sound that captures the intimacy of the piano perfectly. - AKG C451 Cardioid Microphones (XY Pair)
These classic condensers offer a noticeably brighter, sharper tone. Perfect if you’re looking for extra detail or a more focused stereo image.
All three microphone setups bring something unique to the table, giving you tons of creative flexibility. You can blend them together or use them individually depending on the vibe you’re after.
